Annual
Report 2006
Once again, I am pleased
to report on the activities of Time Out for Women.
First and foremost,
Time Out of Women has always been a support and fellowship group
for its members and owes much of its success to its lack of structure.
The group meets weekly on Thursday mornings from 9-12. There
are no dues but the members contribute 50 cents per week for
coffee supplies and take turns looking after the serving of coffee
and tea.
The group has been very
busy in the area of outreach during the past year. These outreach
activities include the annual mailing of Christmas cards to friends
of the group, some of whom are not members of our congregation
but who we try to remember at this time. This year scarves and
hats were knit for the Street Reach program and this was supported
not only by members of the group but also by friends and relatives.
A Coffee morning was
held for the Alzheimer's Society for the 3rd consecutive year.
Once again, I must report that the participation of the congregation
was not great. About $150 was forwarded to the organization.
As so many in our community are affected by the various forms
of dementia, we feel it is important that we contribute in this
way.
In September, several
members of the group served afternoon tea at Commissariat House
(Provincial Historic Site) to a group of tour operators visiting
the province. The cream and homemade jams along with tea biscuits
were very much appreciated.
Another form of outreach
is our very popular games nights. We held four this past year
and these are wonderful evenings of fun and fellowship for those
who bring their card playing friends and bridge clubs for this
evening out. At these events congregational members are often
out-numbered by those from outside the congregation who find
this form of social get-together very important. Once again,
we must thank the Men's Club who have continued to support the
group by serving the refreshments at the games nights.
Within the church, the
group also contributes in many ways. This past year, the members
made another banner for the sanctuary. This one represented Good
Friday and we are pleased to be able to enhance the sanctuary
in this way. We were happy to conduct a worship service during
the minister's absence.
The women are also busy
in the kitchen.. In addition to the usual marmalade, other preserves
as well as chicken and turkey pies were produced and these were
also very popular.
Two soup luncheons were
held and these are always welcome as a form of fellowship for
the congregation after church on Sundays. A reprint of a cookbook
produced by the Woman's Association a number of years ago was
sold out and this was popular for gifts or as a remembrance of
relatives and friends who were part of the congregation over
40 years ago. A sale of flower bulbs was held in time for fall
planting.
This past year the group
once again continued their activities throughout the summer.
During the organ recitals, tours and lunches, the women held
a sale table, where their marmalade and other preserves were
quick sellers. As well, they helped serve lunch to the many visitors
to these events.
In the fall, a Doll
Show and Sale was held. Much planning and work went into this
event. All those who very kindly brought their dolls and the
stories to go along with them are sincerely thanked but we must
report that the patronage of the members of the congregation
was very disappointing.
A casual comment from
one member of TOFW of the wish to learn how to play bridge was
quickly acted upon by Lois Ryan, who is also on the Outreach
Committee of the Church, and the Bridge Club now meets regularly
on Friday afternoons, with members from both within and outside
the congregation. A small weekly fee is shared three ways - Bridge
Club, Outreach and TOFW, and the members take turns serving tea
and coffee at the end of the afternoon's activities. Sonia Reynolds
and Linda Boone help Lois in teaching the rest of us the game.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to be able to contribute
to capital, rather than operational, needs of the congregation,
and we have designated $2500 to the next phase of the restoration
plan. A need for a second refrigerator for the kitchen was recognized;
this was purchased and augments the capabilities of the kitchen.
A recycling account has been
established at Evergreen
Recycling and we ask everyone to help in this form of stewardship.
Canadian Tire money is also collected by the group and this helps
cover some costs for the many activities undertaken; your donations
in this endeavour is also appreciated.
This past year, we had
to say good-bye to Sally Braun-Jackson who moved with her family
to Ontario. Sally (and Willow during school closures) were members
of TOFW. A memorial donation was made to the church in memory
of Elizabeth Purchase, Sr., whose daughter Elizabeth Purchase
is a member of the group. We also have new members in 2006. Marie
Butt and Ingaretha Bishop are now a welcome part of our group
and Linda Boone has joined us in 2007.
An open invitation is
extended to women in the congregation to join us on Thursdays.
We are more than happy to welcome mothers (or grandmothers) with
young children. One never knows what will be the activity from
week to week but that only adds to the enjoyment of the time
spent together.
Respectfully submitted,
LINDA BOWDEN

United Church Women
2006
Fellowship Unit
The Fellowship Unit under the leadership of Phyllis Matthews
held four monthly meetings for the year ending October 2006.
We have an average attendance of twelve members. We have had
eight Home Members on record but in 2006 two of these members
passed away - Elizabeth Purchase and Marion Atwill. A record
is kept at each meeting of home and hospital visits made by the
members and these average 30-40 per month.
November and December meetings were combined and held on
November 28, 2005 with a buffet luncheon at Emerald Palace. Following
this we returned to Phyllis' for our meeting and an hour of fellowship
in exchanging gifts. It was agreed that a donation of $25.00
be made in memory of deceased members.
We held a meeting in January, 2006 and plans were discussed
to have a money raising project, but unfortunately Phyllis became
ill in February and plans were put on hold. After a three month
absence, the Unit met for lunch on June 5, 2006.
Usually we have a meeting in September but because of stormy
weather our next meeting was October 27th.
We held an auction at our October's meeting and raised
$70.35. It was unanimously agreed to donate $75.00 to the Restoration
Phase 3 (painting). Since our last meeting we have mde donations
in memory of Marion Atwill, Elizabeth Purchase and Hilda Butt's
brother (Rev. Sam Miller.)
Although we have had only four meetings this year, we have
enjoyed the fellowship and our time together as a unit in stewardship.

Dorcas Unit
The Dorcas
Unit under the leadership of Sonia Reynolds held three meeting
for the year 2006.
We have diminished
in membership with only seven active members in our unit. Fewer
meetings can be held related to issues concerning health and
especially winter weather.
When we do
meet in individual home, we still enjoy the fellowship. Lunch
is served by the host member followed by a devotional and business.
Again, our Christmas Party was held, December 8, 2006 with our
usual gift exchange.
Four of our
members attended a United Church Women's Rally for East District
held at Wesley United Church, October 30, 2006. Theme of the
rally was "Living Waters". A delicious roast beef dinner
was served at 5:30 pm followed by the Rally in the church sanctuary.
All churches were asked to do skits which only made the evening
more enjoyable. Phyllis Matthews represented our church and provided
much laughter when reading two humorous stories.
Again, our
little unit will continue. As small as we are our contributions
add up, our biggest donation donated to our church.
Respectfully
submitted:
LOIS RYAN

Kianos Unit
The Kainos Unit has been an active UCW group within our
church for over 25 years. Four of our current members were founding
members. This year we welcomed two new members: - Pat Tinkham
who has been teaching us crafts and the art of decorating; and
Tara Mullowney who gives us the distinction of having 3 generations
of one family in our unit!
Our activities center around fund-raising, fellowship,
bible study, and sharing our gifts with others, and this year
included:
" 3 fund-raising Sunday lunches (St. Patrick's Day, Spring,
and Fall)
" Participation by three of our members in Women's World
Day of Prayer service at St. Pius X church
" Jiggs dinner in the fall at Laura Baker's country home
" Our Christmas Luncheon where we enjoyed the fellowship
of women from the other UCW units.
Our fund-raising efforts were very successful, and we were
able to:
" purchase paint so that the Men's Club could paint the
Nursery
" donate $500 to the Restoration Project for shingles
" donate $300 to the church to help with local expenses
" contribute $500 towards the purchase of tables for the
gym
" sponsor our foster child in Cameroon
" made a donation to an orphanage in China on behalf of
a member's grand-daughter.
" Made a donation of $50.00 to the Sunday school
We have been blessed!

Men's
Club Takeout Cold Plates November 25, 2006
Annual
Report 2006
The Men's Service Club had another active year of fellowship
and service. The Club strives to provide and encourage Christian
Fellowship and to provide moral and financial services to the
church and community. Where possible, meetings were held each
month, except in the summer months. Meeting times were held on
the third Tuesday in the month.
The following fellowship and action services were provided
by the club to the church and community throughout 2006:
" Flipper Dinner
" Various meal preparations including 90th anniversary celebrations
" Family Picnic (joint with George Street United Church)
" Jumble Sale
" Turkey Take-Out Dinner
" Help with decorations in the sanctuary
The financial services the club provided to the church
and community include the following contributions (see attached
Treasurer's report for details):
" Church's General Funds
" Supporting other groups in the church
The single outstanding event of the year was, again, the
Turkey Take-Out Dinner. We thank the donors again for their contributions
and the whole congregation for their support and encouragement
in this major effort. It was well organized and we are grateful
to everyone who volunteered to help. This was our major fund
raiser for the year.
We are especially grateful to the cooks in our club, and
in some cases their families, who provided freely of their time
on many afternoons to give members a hearty home-cooked supper
and to give extra support on special occasions.
The Club extends a large Thank You to our minister Rev.
Mr. Vardy for his encouragement and support, and our organist,
Mrs. Young and the choir for their encouragement and support
in various projects. We are very appreciative to Mr. James Edgar
for keeping track of our financial activities. We also thank
the many volunteer office staff for providing office services
when needed and Mr. Baker for looking after the property and
facilities.
